INTRODUCTION

Studies of 3D partonic distribution and fragmentation functions (PDFs) have been widely recognised as one of the key objectives of the JLab 12 GeV upgrade project and the driving force behind construction of the Electron Ion Collider.

Significant amounts of data on the spin-azimuthal distributions of hadrons in DIS, providing access to Transverse Momentum dependent Distributions (TMDs) and Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) have already been accumulated in recent years by several collaborations, including HERMES, COMPASS, BELLE, BaBar and Halls A, B and C at JLab. More than an order of magnitude more is expected from years of running of JLab12. The extraction of real 3D PDFs from different single- and double-spin azimuthal asymmetries is hindered by the absence of a reliable and model-independent procedure for the flavour decomposition of the underlying PDFs.

The planned week-long workshop (June 10 — June 14 2013) on the Structure of Nucleons and Nuclei will be held at the Palace Hotel on the waterfront in Como, Italy, with the aid of the Centro Volta .

The focus will be on increasing theoretical and experimental support for the nucleon and nuclear TMD/PDF programmes worldwide
